I’m Dr. Elliot Hirshorn. I’m a board-certified Chiropractic Neurologist and practitioner of functional medicine at New Life Functional Neurology & Endocrinology. I’m passionate about helping people with chronic conditions like post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD because of my own personal experience with these types of conditions.
One of the largest group of patients not getting the care they need in the traditional medical model is Veterans with PTSD. I know this for a fact, because my brother, Sgt. Zacharie G. Hirshorn, suffered from PTSD as a result of his service in the Army and his deployment to Iraq. He specifically drove himself on two different occasions to the Veterans Affairs hospital telling them that he wanted to kill himself. They asked him if he had a specific plan to do so. He did not. So, they told them there was nothing that they could do for him and sent him home both times.
My wife and I went to visit him on Labor Day weekend of 2014. We flew up to NJ where I’m from and spent the entire day with him and his family. We had a great time. We shot hoops in the backyard and watched the kids play on the swings. He and my dad and I ran out to get food for lunch and then everyone sat around the TV and sang songs as we watched the movie Frozen. We left that afternoon having enjoyed a beautiful day with Zach and his wife and four kids.
Just a few hours later, I got a frantic phone call from my mom. Zach had hung himself in the garage. Our family plunged into a nightmare that continues to this day. Had Zach had the proper resources available to him through the VA or an office like mine in his area, his death may have been prevented.
In Zach’s honor and memory, my office, New Life Functional Neurology & Endocrinology now offers neurofeedback services to Veterans with PTSD at no cost to them or their families.
